Eggs/Dairy

Eggs

  • Janet Frederick’s Dancing Chicken I specialize in organic vegetables (leafy greens, French and Italian green beans, garlic, miniature onions, heirloom tomatoes) and free-range eggs plus handmade baskets and occasionally homemade preserves and cut flowers. My place is located midway between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, on the Iowa River about 5 miles south of Shueyville in northern Johnson County.  Sells exclusively at the Iowa City Farmer’s market.

Dairy

  • Hy-Vee  sells  Amana cheese curds.  I don’t think these are organic, but they are local.  My kids like them for snack instead of string cheese.

Here is a summary of  a dairy conversation we had on the Corridorlocavore yahoo group:

  • Raw Milk:  Illegal in Iowa, but there are groups that share the drive to Wisconsin for it. If you are interested in participating, post your interest to the group.  My assumption is that it is illegal to buy/sell in Iowa, but ok to bring across state borders.  Any clarification on that?
  • Robert’s Dairy: processed in Iowa City., milk from 50 mile radius, no hormones, conventionally homogenized.
  • Heartland Creamery: from Missouri, no hormones, conventionally homogenized, available in glass
